Disable AutoFormat of Hyperlinks in MS Office

By Laura Noble

When a web link or email address is entered into a MS Office file such as a Word document, an Excel spreadsheet or a PowerPoint presentation, MS Office automatically changes the entry into a hyperlink. Refer to the sample below on the right.

This feature can be permanently disabled.

bullet Select Tools, AutoCorrect Options.

bullet Click the AutoFormat As You Type tab.

bullet In the Replace As You Type section, remove the checkmark from the Internet and network paths with hyperlinks.

bullet Click OK.

If it is not required to permanently disable this feature, click the UNDO icon (or Ctrl + Z) immediately after a web link or email address insertion and the AutoFormat will disappear as shown in the sample below on the left.

OR, right-mouse click on the hyperlink and select Remove Hyperlink.

Note: These instructions are for versions 2002 and up. Exact commands may vary in lower versions of MS Office.
