Formulas and Non-Contiguous Ranges in Excel

By Laura Noble

In Excel a formula can be created using cells ranges that are non-contiguous.

  1. In the cell where the formula is to be appear fill in the following:

     =function(

(Example of function is sum, average etc).

  2. Select the first range of cells to be included in the formula (a "dancing" border will surround selection).

  3. Press and hold down the Ctrl key.

  4. Select the remaining ranges.

  5. "Dancing" borders will surround the selections (see the sample below).

  6. Press the Enter key or the check mark in the formula bar to accept the formula.

In the sample below a Sum function is used to calculate the non-contiguous ranges B3:B9 and D3:D9.

The formula can also be typed into a cell but using this mouse/selection method can eliminate the problems of typos and other formula syntax errors.
